Deviated Septum

Dr. Light Treats Deviated Septums in the Boynton Beach area

What Is A Deviated Septum?

The septum is the thin barrier of bone and cartilage located in the middle of the nose separating the two nostrils. A deviated septum occurs when this wall is crooked or misaligned.

Severe cases can not only block the airflow to and from the nose, but can also leave your feeling both dry and crusty, and may even cause bleeding.

Pay Attention To These Indications

More often than not, a person may have a deviated septum and not even know it. While some cases are mild and unnoticeable, others can be identified by the presence of the following symptoms:

  • Nosebleeds
  • Noisy breathing during sleep periods (snoring or sleep apnea)
  • Headaches and sinus pressure in the nasal cavity
  • Frequent nasal congestion (one nostril is usually more affected)
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Obstruction making it difficult to breathe through one or both of the nostrils
  • Dry mouth due to consistent mouth breathing

If not accessed early enough, or currently causes sleep apnea or breathing difficulties, surgery may be recommended to straighten the septum.

Treating A Deviated Septum

While about 80% of the population is affected by this condition to some degree, a deviated septum is not something to be underestimated. While its effects may appear to be minor in the beginning, if not properly treated, it can cause a lot of discomfort and even breathing difficulties. To make sure you are not at risk for more progressive issues, it's best to visit an E.N.T. specialist like Dr. Joshua Light in Boynton Beach early on as a preventative measure.
