Spring vs Summer Allergies

Many people are under the assumption that seasonal allergies are limited to just the spring or summer months. However, allergies can occur year-round, and each season brings its own set of triggers. At Light ENT, we want to help our patients understand the differences between spring and summer allergies so they can better manage their symptoms.

Understanding Spring Allergies

Spring allergies are often caused by airborne pollen from trees, flowers, and grasses. This type of allergy is also referred to as “hay fever.” Common symptoms of spring allergies include sneezing, a runny nose, itchy eyes, and congestion. While these allergies can be challenging to deal with, the good news is that they only last for a few weeks to a few months.

Summer Allergies: A Different Beast

Summer allergies are often triggered by mold spores, dust mites, and pests such as cockroaches. People with asthma may find that their condition worsens during the summer months, leading to more wheezing or respiratory symptoms. Unlike spring allergies, summer allergies are a year-round problem in many areas of the country and can persist throughout the summer season.

Tips for Managing Seasonal Allergies

Fortunately, there are many ways to manage seasonal allergies. Over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays can help relieve symptoms. Patients with severe allergies may benefit from immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots. Additionally, there are precautions you can take to reduce your exposure to allergens. For example, closing windows at night to prevent pollen from entering your home, regularly cleaning bedding to deter dust mites, and avoiding activities outdoors that may expose you to allergens during high pollen or mold days.
