Tinnitus and Its Symptoms

Tinnitus commonly manifests as buzzing, roaring, clicking, hissing, and humming in one or both ears. Tinnitus is technically a sign/symptom that something is off in your auditory system. The auditory system includes the ear, the nerve that connects the inner ear to the brain, and the parts of the brain that process noise. Lodged earwax in the ear canal could be a simple reason for causing tinnitus.

Causes of Tinnitus

Tinnitus can happen as a result of loud noise, respiratory infections, or other damage. As mentioned above, it can also be caused by lodged ear wax in the ear canal. Here at Light E.N.T., we have seen it all and have been able to help no matter the cause. Tinnitus can also be the first sign of hearing loss in older people, and it can be a side effect of certain medications.

When to Get Checked

At Light E.N.T., we recommend that patients see an ENT specialist if the issue isn’t resolved within a week. You want to get on top of the issue so it doesn’t have any major impacts on your hearing, and ultimately your life. ENT specialists will be able to give a more in-depth examination.

Treatment

There are two ways patients can treat their tinnitus: nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatments. A common occurrence is that patients can make lifestyle changes, like a low-sodium diet, and that seems to help deal with these related issues. There are also certain medications that you can speak to your doctor about, that may be able to help.

Tinnitus might be a small noise in your ears, but in some cases it can lead to hearing loss. Reach out to our offices, and get ahead of any hearing issues.
