What Is Sinusitis?

Sinuses are hollow spaces around the nose, and when you have sinusitis, these passages become inflamed and infected. For many, the inflammation starts when you get a cold and viruses or bacteria infect the sinuses. Part of your body’s reaction includes inflammation and is a normal part of getting better after a cold. Sinusitis becomes a problem when symptoms occur for longer than 10 days and continue to cause you pain.

Sinusitis Treatment Options

Your E.N.T doctor will treat your sinusitis differently depending on the cause. The majority of acute sinusitis cases are caused by a viral infection, not bacteria, and as such, should not be treated with antibiotics. Instead, treatment will include pain relievers such as ibuprofen, steroid nasal sprays, or salt irrigation. On the other hand, chronic sinusitis is treated differently, since it is most often caused by inflammation rather than infection. Other factors, such as nasal polyps, asthma, and allergies can also affect sinusitis and need to be treated separately.

Acute/Chronic Sinusitis

You may have acute sinusitis if you have cloudy or colored drainage from your nose for four weeks or more, as well as the other symptoms of sinusitis, such as a congested nose and facial pain. If symptoms do not improve within 10 days of getting sick or improve and then get worse, you should contact an E.N.T. doctor.

You may have chronic sinusitis if your symptoms last for at least 12 weeks. An E.N.T. doctor will also examine your notes for polyps, pus, or thickened mucous. They may also get a CT scan to fully diagnose chronic sinusitis.
