Sinus Flare Ups from Summer Pollen
Are you currently suffering from pain or high pressure in your sinuses or in your ears or teeth? Do you feel like your face is swelling and an enduring sense of nasal stuffiness? Do you tell yourself and others, “awww, it’s just my sinuses flaring up ( again )”?
Did you know…your sinuses themselves are most likely NOT the problem. Sinuses are hollow air spaces within the bones between our eyes, behind your cheekbones, and in your forehead. They produce mucus, which keeps the inside of your nose moist. This mucus helps protect against dust, allergens, and pollutants.
Common culprits of sinus flare up symptoms arise from undetected allergies. Sinus sensitivity and flare ups may come from all the allergy causing pollen allergens in our Palm Beach County environment or certain foods you eat. The reaction can lead to swelling in the nose, making you wonder how your sinuses got so bad!
For Dr. Light’s ENT blog this month, we’ll focus on plant / pollen allergies which are so prevalent at this time of year and causing flare ups for many Boynton Beach and Delray Beach area residents.
In August, weeds like pigweed, ragweed and nettle are in full effect. Everyone has seen pigweed with it’s dark green and pointed leaves, but ragweed is the biggest culprit when it comes to weeds. Did you know one weed plant can make a 1,000,000 pollen grains per day. Almost 50% of cases of pollen-related allergic rhinitis South Florida are caused by ragweeds.
September is the height of season for weed pollen. Pollen grains spread easily through the September winds in Palm Beach County. Weed pollen is a powerful outside allergy trigger common in Boynton Beach and Palm Beach County. 20% of Americans suffer flare ups from weed allergies.
